FOUR SONS OF ANTHONY HERRING,

Son of

JOHN HERRING of Isle of Wight County VA.

By plotting the homesteads of the first Herrings in Bertie Co. NC according to the landmarks named in the deeds onto the same landmarks on the Bertie County Map, it is possible to identify the families of two of the sons of Anthony Herring, namely JOHN (aaaa) and SAMUEL (aaad), each of whom named their first born sons Anthony, for their paternal grandfather. John and Samuel’s brother ABRAHAM (aaac) remained in VA and died on or near his father Anthony’s home on the Blackwater River, having also named his first born son Anthony (aaaca). There also apparently was a son of Anthony named JOSEPH (aaab), who from NC records seems to have died young in either Bertie or Chowan Co.

It is hoped that the ANTHONY HERRING GENEALOGY (DNA Herring H1?) proposed below, when viewed from the perspective of the accompanying Bertie Co. Herring Deed Map, will facilitate understanding which Herrings were who in Craven Co. NC in the 1730s. It is logical to think that the three Anthony Herrings documented there were the sons of Anthony’s sons JOHN, SAMUEL, and ABRAHAM, and that it was JOHN’s (aaaa) sons ANTHONY (aaaaa),

SAMUEL (aaaab) and JOHN (aaaac) who first went to homestead on the Neuse R. in Craven Co. NC. Although there are no Bertie Co. deed records for SAMUEL”S (aaad) son ANTHONY (aaada), it seems logical that he worked his father’s farm on Bucklesberry Poquoson until leaving directly for Craven Co. in the 1730s. ABRAHAM’S (aaac) son ANTHONY (aaaca) seems to have migrated directly from VA to Craven Co. NC, as there is a court record of Abraham’s Craven Co. NC relatives being informed of his death. Obviously there is a great deal more to be learned about these Herrings, but it is hoped this suggested Anthony Herring family tree will be of help to future HERRING genealogists.

From "Seventeenth Century Isle Of Wight Immigrants Establish Colony" p133-134:;

“Another Isle of Wight Immigrant who came with these settlers was Thomas Stamp,

who in 1638 patented 200 acres in Isle of Wight "Northwest upon the Nansemond River."

He together with James Noakes obtained a grant in Carolina on the north side of the river of that name, next to the land of Henry White. Henry White Jr. (Quaker) and Sr. patented 1000 acres next to Thomas Stamp and John Harvey.....................The remaining settlers not heretofore mentioned were Robert Peele, William West and Richard Buller. West patented 2,500 acres of land and left many descendents who became prominent.
