This is a picture taken in 1937 of Robert Holmes Herring and some of his grandchildren. On the back row left to right is Nora, Lloyd and Chloma Herring, Abe Herring's children. Next is Mary Herring holding her little sister, Marilyn. Right in front of Mary, left to right is Clinton and Bill. Mary, Marilyn, Clinton and Bill are all Will Herring's children. The young boy on the left with suspenders is Glenn Herring and the baby that Robert is holding is Alton Herring. Glenn and Al are Abe Herring's youngest children. At this time we're not sure who the other children are. The black car on the left is a 1936 Ford and Clinton believes it belonged to Lloyd.
This is a real "Grapes of Wrath" story. During the Depression right here in the middle of the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma, Robert and his 2nd wife, Prudie, his sisters, Sissy Myrick and Susie Myrick and their families, and his sons Abe and Jim and their families all lived on Will Herring's farm in tents. Will was Robert's oldest son. Unable to find work the Myricks left and moved on to California sometime in the early thirties. After Robert died in 1938 Abe Herring and his family left Oklahoma for California. Traveling with them were Bill Choate and his family. Bill was the father of Aileen, Chloma Herring's wife. They stopped in Nevada for a few years and Abe’s sons, Chloma and Lloyd, worked on the Hoover Dam Project. After the Hoover Dam was finished they moved on to work on the Shasta Dam in northern California.
These are Robert Herring's sons. Abe Herring, Jim Herring and Will Herring. This photo was probably taken on Will Herring's farm in Comanche County,
Oklahoma sometime in the mid-thirties.
This is Will, Robert's oldest son, with his wife Ruby Nix Griffin Herring and their first child, Mary. This photo was taken in 1922.
Not sure when this was taken but it is Will Herring and his brother-in-law,
George Myrick. George was married to Narcissa (Sissie) Herring, Will's older
sister.
This picture was taken on the old home place about 12 miles northwest of
Lawton, Oklahoma sometime in the late thirties.
This is a letter written by Mildred Herring about her Herring Family History, sent to me by her granddaughter, Brenda Schell. Mildred was the daughter of Millard Wood Herring. Millard was the son of Logan Wood Herring, who was the son of John C Herring. Besides a great piece of family history there is reference to the marriage of Logan's daughter, Della Mae Herring to her first cousin, James H Herring. It was also known on James' side of the family that he married his first cousin. We now have the same story from both sides of the family. If this is so then Logan Wood Herring and Robert Holmes Herring were brothers and the sons of John C Herring.
