Many thanks to Bridget Herring for providing the James W Crow Descendents genealogy page.
Ruby Nix Griffin Herring's maternal grandfather was James William Crow. It has been reported through family history that he was a full blood Crow Indian that had escaped from a prison train and made his home in Texas. On the 1880 Census of Milam County, TX he reports himself as being white and born in Texas. The 1900 Census of Milam County, TX he reports being white and born in Arkansas. Laura Bell reports her father also being born in Arkansas on the 1900 Census ... makes me wonder if he really was Indian or not.
James Crow served three months in Company C 20th Texas Calvary, known as Bass's Division during the Civil War. His record reads; "Crow, James Wm (private): enlisted 22 Mar 1862, Kaufman Co; 36; discharged 22 Jun 1862; 5'10", blue eyes, dark hair, discharged for being over 35 (now 37) 30 Jun 1862."
The State of Texas promised to give men land if they enlisted and served at least three months in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. James Crow served three months before he was discharged for being "too old". He also qualified for indigent veterans benefits.
